Growing up in rural Hitchcock, Texas, Michael Sam came from humble beginnings. Overcoming a childhood filled with adversity and tragedy, he turned to football as his sanctuary. Michael flourished as a person and a football player at the University of Missouri, finding a new home and family amongst his team and classmates. It all culminated in 2013, with Michael being named a 1st Team All-American and Co-SEC Defensive Player of the year as Missouri cappied off a dream season with a dramatic Cotton Bowl victory sealed with a sack from #52. After telling the world his story in February 2014, Michael has since gone on to be drafted by the St. Louis Rams, win the ESPY’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award, HRC’s Upstander Award, and be named a finalist for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. Michael is currently training for the upcoming football season and has been included as part of the cast for the 20th season of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. Michael resides in Dallas, TX with his fiancée, Vito Cammisano.
Recently, Mr. Sam announced on Twitter that he will be heading to Graduate School.
