The month of March is filled with reasons to celebrate. Between International Women’s Day on Wednesday, March 8th, and Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14, there’s more than one occasion to honor the women and mothers in our lives, while caring for ourselves and others. We invite you to meet on the mat this March and practice a simple yoga flow to nurture, nourish, and embody our feminine sides.
Where physical meets mental, popular asanas (or postures) for women include downward-facing dog, cobra pose, warrior II, triangle pose, child’s pose, camel pose, and pigeon pose. On their own, or incorporated into a flow, these postures can help stretch the whole body, relieve tension in the neck and shoulders, elongate the spine, strengthen core muscles, and improve flexibility in the hips, thighs, legs, and pelvis.
Women of all ages and fitness levels can benefit from a yoga practice, whether it’s a quick five-minute flow or an everyday workout routine. Yoga helps improve strength, balance, and flexibility while relieving stress and promoting relaxation. Hatha yoga, which focuses on physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation, may be the best bet for beginners. Experienced yogis seeking out a more intense workout experience can opt for a more dynamic practice of form and flow through. Restorative yoga, or yin yoga, offers a gentle, relaxing practice to help reduce stress and tension in the body.
“When you come to the mat, it’s a safe space to set your intentions and come home to yourself,” said Yoga Design Lab (YDL) spokesperson Bianca Fesenbeckh. “In a yoga class, in the privacy of your own home, or out in nature, women of all shapes and sizes can meet themselves on the mat and honor our collective womanhood this March.”
