Beyond The Music with Paul Bellantoni

With the recent release of “Illusions,” I felt it was time to have a seat with Paul and go beyond the music for a moment. Get your cups and get ready, it’s time to sip!

Where are you from?

I was originally born in New York (a little upstate). I spent my teen years in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and then in my 20’s and 30’s I bounced between South Florida and LA.

How long have you been in the industry?

Oh man! 20 years this September.

What first drew you to do music?

I grew up around great music. It just looked like a superpower to me; so magical. I would say the catalyst was finding Tori Amos and Ani Difranco when I was beginning to discover who I was. I owe them a lot. Their music really helped me step into my true self.

How many projects have you released to date?

One solo project and two Americana albums with some great people.

Can you tell us about your latest release “Illusions” and the background/inspirations behind it?

This song is by far the one I am closest to. Like in life this past year, I was put to the limit emotionally, physically, and even just trying to understand our own mortality and what is happening in the world. My songs always have an emotional “you and I” narrative. That helps me to find this conversational room where I can get out what I’m feeling. But, even in the darkest stories, there is always a glimmer of hope.

What would you like your base to take away from this project?

I sing from my own pain and life experiences, and if my music can be a glimmer of hope for anyone out there that is struggling with their identity, loneliness, sexuality, family, relationships, or just hard knocks of life, then I’ve done my job. Music mends the soul.

What do you think of the state of the industry in 2021?

Oh man. It’s been a flurry of change, but I think there are more chances for us indie singe- songwriters if you just get yourself out there; art always adapts.

How have you been able to adapt to engaging with your fans during the pandemic?

Lots of reluctant social media lol! You have to expose your vulnerability as an everyday person a little more, and on top of that learn a whole lot of new tech to get your music out there in a digital universe.

Who do you think is the most influential artist at this time and why?

I don’t think that way. I think all music is influential. It’s a find your tribe thing.

Who has been your favorite collaboration so far in your career? Why?

Honestly, my dear friend Kalen Chase (Korn/Vimic). He gets me, also knows how to put me in my place, and we make beautiful music together.

In YOUR words, How do you think you differ from others in your genre?

I’m a soulful club cat that always marched to my own drum. I taught myself piano my way, I sing my way, I feel the world my way, and I think people see that and respect that.

Dead or alive, who would be your dream collaboration?

Dead: Amy Winehouse or David Bowie. Alive: Pink and Stevie Nicks. (call me)

What was the first album you purchased?

The Cranberries. NO need to argue.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

My song “Illusions” of course! Though I have been doing a cool jam of Pinks “Just Like A Pill’; I’m digging that.

What is your favorite saying or Mantra?

“It’s ok.”

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

I’m a visual artist as well and do all my album artwork and some friends’. I’m also pretty sick in the kitchen.

Tell us what the fans can expect from you in the coming months?

New music, touring, singing for you, laughing with you, crying with you. Bringing the music back!

To the upcoming generation who admires your artistry, what words of advice would you give to them when it comes to pursuing their dreams?

Love yourself! Keep the confidence. You are magic. Follow your intuition and the moon; they will never steer you wrong.

Last but not least, What are your social media handles?
