Let’s talk, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” I had the chance to see the show and I think I may have a new favorite for the season.
Think Freaky Friday meets Glee…… Yeeeeeeeep! It’s like that.
Episode one introduces you to Zoey and gets you in tune with how it happens…. You’ll see what “it” is. LoL! The show is really captivating and draws you in with its musical elements. The story is one anyone can relate to as Zoey is trying to survive in everyday life.
Upon receiving her life changing experience, Zoey begins to look at life in a new persecutive. Confiding in her neighbor, Mo, played by Alex Newell, Zoey goes for an introverted coder to Iyanna Fix My Life. LoL!
In speaking with creator Austin Winsberg, he had this to say about the show.
This show is very personal to me. Several years ago my father passed away from a rare neurological disease called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. The last six months he was alive, we didn’t know how much he was processing or even if he was processing at all. I so badly wanted to understand what was going in his head at the time – what he was thinking and feeling and how he was seeing the world.
When I finally had enough distance to write about it, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if my father saw everything during those last several months as big, bold, musical numbers.” This possibility made me smile and gave me a sense of hope. From these origins, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” was created.
If there’s a song in your heart, it will get in her head. Jane Levy stars in this high-concept drama as Zoey Clarke, a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, who always preferred podcasts over pop songs, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts and desires of the people around her – her family, co-workers and complete strangers – through popular songs. At first she questions her own sanity, but after getting some guidance from her musically adept neighbor, Mo, and making a breakthrough with her ailing father, Zoey soon realizes this unwanted curse may just be an incredibly wonderful gift as she connects with the world like never before.
The series stars Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, with Peter Gallagher and Mary Steenburgen. Lauren Graham is special guest star.
Austin Winsberg will write and executive produce. Richard Shepard will direct and executive produce (pilot only). Paul Feig, Jessie Henderson, Kim Tannenbaum and Eric Tannenbaum, David Blackman and Daniel Inkeles will executive produce. Jason Wang will co-executive produce. Dan Magnante will produce.
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is produced by Lionsgate and Universal Television in association with the Tannenbaum Company, Feigco Entertainment and Universal Music Group’s Polygram.
