Do you have “Single Man Problems?” I think I might! But I may be use to it. Ok, wait. Let’s talk about it.
Here TV, America’s first and largest LGBTQ+ video channel, is streaming the comedy series “Single Man Problems,” co-created, written and directed by Bobby Ashley and Robert McCullough. Back in January, in an exclusive deal, Here TV picked up the eight-part series as part of its incubator initiative. Bobby Ashley is a young, multi-talented filmmaker, writer, and director.
“Single Man Problems,” set in New York City, is an eight-part comedy that follows Ronnie Maxwell, a 20 something, self-conscious gay black man, who catfishes his way into finding love and navigates difficult career and social situations. The show explores the millennial experience from the perspective of Ronnie, who grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from City College. Currently living in his best friend’s apartment, Ronnie works odd jobs while trying to pursue a career in screenwriting. His desire to find love, or even a great date, raises the awareness of color-ism within the on-line dating realm. This episodic comedy highlights universal themes at the intersection of contemporary Black, Gay, and heterosexual experiences.
“After the positive responses “Single Man Problems” received from festival audiences and sponsors this past summer, my producers and I felt strongly that the show deserved a genuine partnership with a special network and streaming platform,” states Bobby Ashley. He goes on to say, “When Here TV approached us everything clicked. We are proud and excited to partner with Here TV, a true media ground-breaker.”
“The Here TV Incubator is designed to creatively and structurally support emerging LGBTQ video artists during their artistic process, and to see their works exhibited not only on digital services, but also on cable, satellite and even theatrically where we have extensive expertise,” said John Mongiardo President and Managing Director of Here TV.
“Single Man Problems” features a diverse ensemble cast which includes principals; Keefe Grimes, Michel Vidal and Shaniqua J. West. The show began production in November of 2017 and enjoyed a successful run on the 2018 summer film festival circuit, which notably included the HBO New York Latino Film festival. Mr. Ashley, who is based in Brooklyn, New York, has one previous web series, “The Ave,” an urban saga which he self-presents on Amazon Prime Video. In two seasons, “The Ave” has garnered more than 20 Million streams since its launch in 2017.
Bobby Ashley is a creative, independent force whose storytelling adds a distinct voice to the cultural mainstream. I’m thrilled to welcome him to the Here TV family.
