When Gay and Horror combine in Print. Thank the chef, Darlene Burns

dburnsmcwtdUp until 2009, Darlene Burns struggled with her identity and found it hard to be her true self . She finally decided to come out of the closet as a lesbian after reading the book and watching the film, “The Secret.” Yassssssssss Darlene, come on for the hush hush hunni….

As an author, Burns started writing in high school, but wasn’t inspired to pick her writing back up until a fellow author gave her the motivation to get started on her novel, “Midnight Comes with the Dawn: The Vampyir Plague.”

Making a difference in the LGBT community became a personal mission for Burns, as she puts a new face on the paranormal and horror genre, with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual characters of color.

“As a Queer woman of color that is a triple challenge. The doors that are closed to me simply because I am a triple challenge, I want to open, tear down and crumble. So the next female, woman of color (and happens to be Queer) doesn’t have the same blockage. She can walk through with ease and respect. Simply put, I don’t mind paving the way, because I know that there is an inspiring young girl who will do great things because I stood up and set up precedent for her and countless others. I’m excited that in my own way I get to be an example for so many that don’t have a voice, can’t speak for themselves or are still too ashamed to come out and be who they truly are.”

says Burns when asked what makes her so passionate about her work as a writer, and an activist.

Burns is a bacon, and nap loving, Netflix watching, doting mother that loves to spend time with her partner. She wants to continue working with people and organizations to help fight LGBT homelessness, and suicide within the LGBT community. Burns works to create change and writes for the reader that continues to use their imagination.

Burns published her first novel, “Midnight Comes With the Dawn: The Vampyir Plague” with Wheelman Press in 2013, but after the publisher shut down, Burns has republishing her novel herself as of September 29th, 2015.
