Allow me to paint you a picture! Picture it Sicily 1932… LoL! No, but in all seriousness picture Girl’s Trip meets Woman Empowerment and a Building and Networking opportunity of a Lifetime. Now, I present to you, “The Weekend Soiree.”
“The Weekend Soiree” is a 4-day retreat in New Orleans from October 31st – November 3rd, created for queer women of color, and curated with their specific interests in mind. Inspired by the need to counterbalance the lack of support they receive from both the Black and LGBT community at large.
Founded by graduate school friends Imani Grant and Mary Fuller, both queer black womxn, who found that while LBGT advocacy around the world was increasing at a record pace, one group within the spectrum was consistently left out of the conversion. Queen Womxn of Color. Moreover, because of gentrification, safe spaces to gather were disappearing and representation was on a further decline. To be marginalized within an already marginalized group was disheartening at best.
Descending on New Orleans from October 31st – November 3rd, “Bedlam in the Big Easy” boasts 50 plus activities, 9 signature events, and countless surprises. All which were mindfully designed to provide a 360-degree experience that couples daytime workshops that cover a myriad of topics that impact the multidimensional queer womxn with thoughtfully produced evening social experiences.
Some of the workshops include: “Unpacking Religious Baggage”, “Family Planning Panel”, “Letters to our Masculinity” and “The Feminine of Center Experience.”
In addition to the workshops, activities such as a “Set It Off” Scavenger Hunt, Wellness and Workout Sessions, a group Psychic reading, Tantric Yoga, The “Queerly Wed Game”, a spin-off of the Classic TV Show The Newly Wed Game, a “Wicked and Wondrous Comedy Show” and the highly anticipated, “Sinners and Saints Weekender Masquerade Ball” await
“Weekenders”.
How did it all begin you ask, allow me to fill you in? Grant and Fuller, while returning from yet another lackluster “pride” event, understood that they needed to be the change for their community that they were looking for…..Thus the birth of The Weekend Soiree.
