Dov wants to “Be Your Lover”

DOV

Brooklyn based, Tel Aviv born queer pop multi-instrumentalist and producer DOV (née Dov Eagle) shares his debut EP Be Your Lover, out today. He moved to NYC from Tel Aviv after serving in the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) until age 21. The son of a left-wing political activist, he migrated from Israel and its conflicted ideals as they didn’t fit the life that he wanted to lead as a queer liberal musician and artist. In the five-track collection, DOV encapsulates his experience as an LGBTQ immigrant searching for love and acceptance and eventually finding it in himself.

The EP title track was written about an unrequited love. Over detuned synths and swelling effervescent textures DOV croons “I will never hold another, cast out to the open sea”. On “Save” DOV teamed up with fellow Israeli vocalist and queer artist TESHA to write a coming out rallying cry. “It’s a spiritual movement about releasing yourself from your past, the house that you grew up in, and from society’s never-ending demands and constraining definition of sexual orientation,” DOV says of the song. The track’s percussion punctuates layers of elegantly scraping guitar, ghostly reverb, and ominous synth melodies beneath TESHA’s sweet and sinister vocal. “Sell It To Me Harshly” ruminates on how things are not always as they seem; that it’s better to face the harshness of reality than continue to live in a fantasy. The track opens with a slow-burning, gently frenetic intro that swells into an atmospheric and minimal yet propulsive house beat. TESHA swoops in with a woozy multitude of contorted vocals over a carnally dark array of sonic textures. “Insta” is the only instrumental track on the EP and takes inspiration from the emotive soundscapes of DOV’s favorite artists like Mount Kimbie, Bibio, and Baths. The EP closer “Lost In The Night” was written about DOV’s complicated time in the Israeli Defense Forces as a gay soldier.
