MoMA Exclusive: This special edition of our Breton Shirt was produced to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and WorldPride celebrations in New York City this June. The first striped of the shirt match the six colours of the Rainbow Flag, designed in 1978 by Gilbert Baker. The most enduring symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement, the Rainbow Flag was acquired by MoMA for its collection in June 2015 – on the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its historic decision to legalise same-sex marriage across the country.
The Breton Pride Shirt is designed and produced in Brittany, France by Armor Lux. A vintage Breton Shirt was featured in MoMA’s exhibition Items: Is Fashion Monitor? Originally developed to increase sailor’s visibility, this 21st-century version shows up for gay rights. The Breton pride shirt is available in sizes XXS through XL.
