The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is set to honor entertainment marketing executive Carolyn Sloss, Vice President of Allied Global Marketing, for its 8th Annual SYNERGY ATL Program on August 1 at the Auburn Avenue Research Library. For nearly a decade, the networking event has brought together power players in Atlanta’s creative and business communities in celebration of a key figure in the area’s film and television industry with the main purpose of further fostering positive relationships among them.
“For more than a decade Carolyn has led the growth trajectory of the film and entertainment community in Atlanta,” said AAFCA president Gil Robertson. “Her commitment to the Arts & Entertainment scene has been impactful to the permanent infrastructure that we see today throughout this region. AAFCA is very proud to salute her.”
Sloss, who earned her B.A. in journalism at Auburn University, began her career as a public relations manager for Planet Hollywood in Atlanta where she distinguished herself by planning the restaurant’s activities during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. At Fahlgren Advertising, where she rose from account supervisor to vice president, Sloss led the entertainment division’s publicity and promotions efforts before launching Allied’s first office in the South. Today, as vice president of Allied Global Marketing, a position she’s held for a decade, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native oversees publicity and marketing campaigns for such clients as Universal, Columbia Pictures, Netflix and more.
“I am thrilled and proud to be named as the 2019 honoree by AAFCA and its SYNERGY ATL Program,” said Sloss. “In my role at Allied, I’ve strived to forge a path that’s wider and more inclusive in the community. To be recognized for achieving this, even in a small way, is truly a great honor!”
In addition to its SYNERGY ATL Program, AAFCA continues its Summer Screening Series of films, new and classic, followed by group discussions. Uppity, the documentary about race car legend Willy T. Ribbs, who competed in NASCAR, the Trans-Am racing series and the Indianapolis 500, kicks off the series from 2-6 pm Saturday, June 29, at the Auburn Avenue Research Library in Atlanta. After the film, guests will be treated to a Q&A with Mr. Ribbs as well as a reception in his honor.
“The Summer Screening Series is one of the ways AAFCA engages the community. The films selected give us an opportunity to mark milestones with beloved films, ponder themes and impact. Last year, we were fortunate to revisit Poetic Justice for its 25th anniversary with dear AAFCA friend and film legend John Singleton, who we recently lost,” said Robertson.
“This year, in addition to getting to know racing legend Willy T. Ribbs, we look forward to exploring James Baldwin’s impactful explorations of race in two film adaptations of his novels Go Tell It on the Mountain and If Beale Street Could Talk. We also look forward to sharing the 21st century update I Got the Hook Up 2 to the 1998 underground classic.”
AAFCA SYNERGY is a tentpole program produced by the African American Film Critics Association. Previous AAFCA SYNERGY Award recipients include entertainment entrepreneurs Tirrell Whittley and Nick Nelson; UPtv founder and president Charles Humbard; producer/director Roger Bobb; film executives Brett Dismuke and Eric Tomosunas; Mark Swinton, producer at Tyler Perry Studio; award-winning producer/director Rob Hardy and Melissa Ingram, General Manager of Aspire cable network owned by Magic Johnson.
The African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) actively reviews cinema at-large, with a particular emphasis on films which include the Black experience. The organization creates a platform for movies with universal appeal to the African-American community, while highlighting films produced, written, directed and starring, persons from the African Diaspora. Our members are also involved in our advocacy work that includes programming for students interested in film criticism and journalism. AAFCA members are a geographically diverse cross-section of journalists, covering all genres of the cinematic arts, while representing multiple mediums – including print, TV, radio broadcast and online. Collectively, they have reached a worldwide audience in excess of 100 million.
