About LaLa Anthony
The world met La La Anthony when she was a sixteen-year-old radio co-host with famed rapper Ludacris on 97.1 in Atlanta, GA. Her success in radio quickly led to a career in television, where she became the host of MTV’s Direct Effect and TRL at the peak of its 90’s popularity. In 2001, she made her acting debut in the romantic comedy Two Can Play At That Game. Viewers couldn’t get enough of La La. In 2010, she married NBA phenomenon Carmelo Anthony on VH1’s reality show “La La’s Wedding,” which immediately spawned another hit show, “La La’s Full Court Life.” The public’s interest in her budding romance led her to write and publish the New York Times best-selling book, “The Love Playbook,” which she followed with “The Power Playbook” in 2015. The La La brand continued to grow with her stage debut in the Off-Broadway show, “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” the launch of a cosmetic and clothing line, and the landing of a recurring role on the Starz hit show, “Power”. Through all the fame and success, La La never forgot her roots. The Brooklyn-born Puerto Rican now spends her time on perhaps her most personal mission yet – working to revive Puerto Rico after the devastating damage caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
About Brand Nubian
Brand Nubian kicked off the 90s with One For All, a debut album that would go on to be considered one of the Top 100 Rap albums of all time. The group’s three members, Grand Puba, Lord Jamar and Sadat X, were all solo MCs who came together in New Rochelle, NY in the late 80s – each bringing a distinct individual flavor to their music. Their sound combined soulful samples and hip hop beats with socially conscious lyrics rooted in the Five-Percent Nation on Top 5 songs like “Wake Up”, “Slow Down” and “Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down”. Despite their early success, the group at times drew criticism for pro-black, militant messages, including a music video banned from MTV for featuring a black man in white-face. And internally the group struggled from the start, with lead MC and producer, Grand Puba, exiting the group after disputes during their first album. Grand Puba went on to pursue a successful solo career while Sadat X and Lord Jamar continued to maintain the group until it eventually fell apart in the mid-90s. Although the three members reunited years later, the group broke apart once again. And in the years after the break up, they each struggled with personal drama, from arrests, to painful losses, and continued controversy. In this revealing episode of Unsung, Grand Puba, Lord Jamar and Sadat X keep in real about the rise and fall of Brand Nubian, the message behind their music and where the group is headed today.
