Outfest – the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization promoting equality by creating, sharing, and protecting LGBT stories on the screen – today announced the complete programming lineup for the 2016 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival presented by HBO. The nation’s leading LGBT festival will be held July 7-17, 2016.
The 2016 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival opens at the Orpheum Theatre with Samuel Goldwyn Films’ “The Intervention”, Clea Duvall’s engaging directorial and screenwriting feature debut starring Cobie Smulders, Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Jason Ritter, Ben Schwartz, Alia Shawkat and Clea Duvall; and closes with Vertical Entertainment’s “Other People” – a 2016 Sundance Film Festival standout, written and directed by Saturday Night Live’s Chris Kelly and starring Jesse Plemons, Zach Woods, Bradley Whitford, Maude Apatow, Molly Shannon and June Squibb. Additional gala screenings include: U.S. Centerpiece “Spa Night” (Dir/Scr: Andrew Ahn), International Centerpiece “Esteros” (Dir/Scr: Gerald “Papu” Curotto), Documentary Centerpiece “Kiki” (Dir: Sara Jordenö), Legacy Centerpiece “Different From The Others” (Dir: Richard Oswald), and Special Centerpiece “King Cobra”(Dir: Justin Kelly) starring James Franco, Christian Slater, Keegan Allen, Molly Ringwald and Alicia Silverstone.
“I am proud and honored to present a program that focuses on the most talented queer voices across all media – from film to television to the web,” says Christopher Racster, Executive Director of Outfest. “Each year we see a snapshot of the lives of LGBT people from around the world. Honest reflections and celebrations of our experiences. These depictions take us on intensely personal journeys, which increasingly show that our similarities are greater than our differences. At a time when the cultural zeitgeist is using differences to drive us apart, these films intimately show us that each of our stories matter and each need a platform to be heard, understood, and respected.”
With 162 films from 19 different countries, Outfest Los Angeles once again brings together the highest quality of LGBTQ film in the world along with highlighting efforts in the mainstream media to tell those stories. The 2016 Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival will return to the Ford Theatres after a two-year renovation of the historic venue. The much-anticipated comedy, “Ghostbusters” will kick off the screenings on July 13 with Documentary Centerpiece “Kiki”, “Bearcity 3”, “Modern Love”, and Closing Night Gala “Other People” following on the subsequent days.
“It is an amazing year for LGBT cinema,” adds Outfest Director of Programming Lucy Mukerjee-Brown. “Outfest Los Angeles continues to raise the profile of queer film, and launch the careers of LGBT filmmakers. This year we are particularly proud to spotlight women in the industry with 43% of the festival’s content helmed by female directors. Relatedly, at a time when there is some concern about film production in Los Angeles, it was heartening to see local, independent filmmakers making use of the rich diversity of this city to propel their storytelling. The Made in LA spotlight pulls together the mosaic of cultures that make up this city and reminds us that despite our differences, we are one community.”
Spotlight screenings include the Season 2 premiere of Hulu’s “Difficult People”; a tribute screening of “The Hunger” in honor of David Bowie; HBO’s “Looking: The Movie” and “The Trans List”; Tig Notaro’s new comedy series “One Mississippi” from Amazon as well as the Season 3 premiere of “Transparent”; and TBS’ new comedy series “Search Party”.
Outfest Los Angeles will also be showcasing three digital series which includes the world premiere of “For Ex-Lovers Only” from director/screenwriter Andrew Gitomer, the Season 2 world premiere of “The Chadwick Journals” from directors Deondray Gossett and Quincy LeNear and the 2016 GLAAD Media Award winner for Outstanding Digital Journalism, “Holler if You Hear Me: Black and Gay in the Church” from director Clay Cane.
