My Dragon Con 2024 Experience: A Queer Celebration of Fandom

Labor Day weekend in Atlanta means one thing for me—Dragon Con. This year wasn’t just about fandom; it was about finding my people and fully leaning into the queer joy this convention has been cultivating for years.

The Dragon Con Queerios Facebook group made it easy to connect before the weekend even started. Meeting those familiar faces in person felt like stepping into a chosen family reunion—swapping cosplay tips, making plans, and laughing until our sides hurt.

The highlight? Spectrum, Dragon Con’s queer dance party. Imagine flashing lights, pounding bass, and a sea of glitter, wigs, and unapologetic self-expression. It didn’t matter if you were in full cosplay or just rocking a pride tee—you belonged.

Cosplay itself was a form of identity play all weekend. Gender-bent heroes, androgynous anime icons, and mashups that broke every rule filled the halls. I joined in with my own twist on a favorite character, and it was freeing in a way I didn’t expect.

Then came my favorite surprise: a VIP ticket to Dragon Con Night at the Georgia Aquarium. Picture this—exclusive after-hours access, glowing tanks of jellyfish and whale sharks, an open bar, gourmet bites, and a private ballroom decked out in fantasy décor. Between sipping cocktails and wandering the galleries, it felt like I’d stepped into an otherworldly dream.

By the time the weekend ended—with pride flags flying in the parade and queer nightlife still in full swing—I was reminded why Dragon Con is more than just a con. It’s a space where fandom and identity meet, where you can be your truest self surrounded by people who get it.

Next year, I’m back for the cosplay, the aquarium, and Spectrum—but mostly for the community that makes it all magic.
