A Q&A with NYC-Based Queer Producer DOV

We’re loving your new remix. How and why did you decide to collaborate with Chinwe specifically? And what about her music drew you in?

I heard Chinwe’s music on Jamz supernova BBC 1xtra show which we were both featured on, and I was immediately in love! Her voice caught my attention right away. I really love the softness of her music, but her voice is very “present” and almost hard to ignore because it’s so unique.

How would you best describe the LGBTQ+ music scene in NYC, and where are some of your favorite places to perform?

The LGBTQ+ music scene in NYC is the future – it’s exciting, diverse, and new! If you want to see the future of queer art in general, NYC is the place. I really love Elsewhere; it’s a great venue that I’ve played at a few times, and I’m also really loving 3 Dollar Bill.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and why?

I would say that my taste in music is pretty eclectic, but if I had to choose, I would probably say Kate Bush among others. She was the biggest influence for me to become a producer and produce my own music. Her originality and fearless approach as an artist and a producer really made me want to produce my own music and be in full control of the art I put out.

Where do you hope to hear your music being played someday? Do you have any dream venues where you’d like to perform?

Honestly, I always wanted my music on “Broad City” since I LOVE that show but it was too late. I would say any show that I like I would be honored to have my music on. A dream venue would be Terminal 5 – I’ve never played in a warehouse-style venue, and it seems very fun and industrial, which I’m very much into.

What do you hope listeners take away from your “Something Beautiful” remix?

When I make music, I do it in the most authentic way possible. I go with my gut feeling and my vibes without really thinking about anything else. I stay true to how I feel, and I would very much like the listeners to do the same. Music and art, in general, are very subjective, and that’s what I love about it. I wouldn’t want to dictate or “manipulate” my listeners to feel a certain way – I want the listeners to feel what they want to feel in the moment the song catches them and take from the song whatever they need it to be in that moment in time in their lives.

If you could bring 5 albums with you to a deserted island for the next 10 years, what would they be?

I LOVE that question 🙂 Ok it was not easy but i would say:

Kate bush – Hounds of Love

Fiona apple – The Idler Wheel…

Young Fathers – Heavy Heavy

FKA Twigs – LP1

Charli XCX – How I’m feeling now
