New Japan 101 data reveals which movie genres Americans are most obsessed with

A new study by Japan-101 has analyzed search volume data for multiple phrases, terms, and queries related to movies and movie genres over the last 12 months in order to determine which movie genre the US loves the most.

Ranking in at first place are horror movies. With 1,024,540 total average monthly search volume, Horror movies take the top stop for America’s most searched genre by far. California is the state that is most obsessed with horror movies, with an average monthly search volume of 386 per 100,000 people.

Animated movies come in at second place with a total average monthly search volume of 592,050. Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival, is the state that has the highest average monthly search volume for animated films out of all the states, with 230 per 100,000 people, narrowly beating out California at 224 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.

In third place are comedy movies, with a total average monthly search volume of 405,420. Adjusted for population, Connecticut shows the most interest for the genre, with an average monthly search volume of 173 per 100,000 people.

Superhero movies take the fourth spot in the list with a total average monthly search volume of 288,780. California shows the most interest in this particular, with an average monthly search volume of 110 per 100,000 people.

Taking the fifth spot on the list is Sci-Fi with a total average monthly search volume of 187,660. Colorado is the state that shows the most interest in the genre, with an average monthly search volume of 78 per 100,000 people.

The remainder of the top ten features action movies in at sixth place with a total average monthly search volume of 179,860, with New York showing the most interest in action movies, having an average monthly search volume of 65 per 100,000 people.

Close behind in seventh place is romance with 176,790 total average monthly searches. Utah once again shows the most interest for this particular genre, with a total average monthly search volume of 82 per 100,000 people.

With a total average monthly search volume of 127,900, war movies take the eighth spot in the list. North Dakota takes the spot as the state that’s most obsessed with the genre, with 51 total average monthly search volume per 100,000 people, beating Colorado and Utah at 44 and 43, respectively.

Ninth place goes to documentaries with a total average monthly search volume of 123,3000. Adjusted for population, the people of Oregon are the ones that show the most interest in documentaries, with a total average monthly search volume of 46 per 100,000 people.

Finally, rounding off the list in tenth place are crime movies, with a total average monthly search volume of 58,560. California once again shows the most interest for this particular genre, with an average monthly search volume of 23 per 100,000 people.

Adjusted for population, California tops the list by far as the state that is most obsessed with movies overall, with an average monthly search volume of 1296 per 100,000 people. Texas comes in at second with 1203 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Third place goes to Utah with 1180 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.
