Deney Adam has released a third single from his upcoming Sandcastle EP; a steamy, sultry cover of “Judas” from Banks’ 2016 album, The Altar. Produced by Mher Filian, Adam’s version is smokier than the original while still maintaining its quintessential chill vibe. “I was obsessed with Banks’ album when it first came out,” remembers Deney Adam from his NYC home. “I had ’Judas’ and ‘Train Wreck’ on repeat for literally three months, nonstop, every day. I knew I would have to cover one of the songs for the new ep. I chose ‘Judas’ because it speaks to the villainous moment we are living in.”
“I’ve always been intrigued by Judas, the notorious biblical figure who is most famous for his kiss of betrayal,” Deney Adam continues. “Like Benedict Arnold, his name is synonymous with traitor. We’re currently dealing with a slew of treacherous, double-crossing characters in the White House and in Congress; cowards who are turning their backs on what they know is right in order to protect their own jobs. It’s a betrayal to their oaths of office and a reminder that some forms of duplicity are absolutely unforgettable and unforgiveable.”
“Judas” is the third release from Deney Adam’s upcoming Sandcastle EP. It follows “Blue” and “Heart Drop,” released earlier this year.
According to Adam, every song on the new EP is different, delivering its own message covering an array of subjects. “They’re about sex, beauty, youth, and break ups, but what makes them all come together is their similar sonic vibe. I wanted the EP to feel worldly and maybe add a little spice to everyone’s lives.”
When Deney Adam is not recording, he’s working his full-time job as a make-up artist in New York City. His work has been featured in numerous magazines including Vogue, Interview and the New York Times. He has worked with top designers including François Nars and Tom Ford and photographers Steven Klein and Mario Testino, among others. His celebrity clientele includes Susanne Bartsch, Lady Gaga, Daya and Kiiara.
“I never intended to be a makeup artist,” he admits. “It’s something I fell into after I got a job at Mac cosmetics. I happened to be good at it so from the make-up counter, I got into agency work and it’s been a wild ride that has allowed me to work with some of the most creative people on the planet. I love doing makeup but music has always been a big part of my life and I have never let go of my passion to sing.”
Deney Adam counts Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Lana Del Ray, Nina Simone and Sevdaliza, an Iranian-Dutch singer, songwriter and record producer, as his musical inspirations. With his new pop platform, he hopes to be a strong voice for the LGBTQ community and encourage all to dream big and to keep pushing. He feels that if he can help listeners to forget about their problems, if even for a moment, then he has accomplished his job as an artist.
