NBC6 / WTVJ will air “Louder Than A Bomb: The Parkland Poets,” on Tuesday, September 18 at 7 PM (E/T.) This is the fourth consecutive year the station produces the documentary-style half-hour special, in partnership with the Jason Taylor Foundation, to highlight the yearly spoken word competition among South Florida high school students.
Louder Than A Bomb (LTAB) was founded in 2001 through the Young Chicago Authors and is now considered the largest youth poetry festival in the world. The Jason Taylor Foundation launched Louder Than A Bomb Florida (LTABFLA) during the 2014-2015 school year to empower and unite South Florida’s youth and community through the art of the spoken word.
“I am so proud of our team here at NBC6 as we continue to showcase this wonderful competition,” said Larry Olevitch, President and General Manager at NBC6. “This year is uniquely special as we followed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School team who used poetry as a vehicle to open up about dealing with such tragedy.”
This year, “Louder Than A Bomb: The Parkland Poets” centers around the Marjory Stoneman Douglas poetry club students and their club sponsor and teacher who was hit by fragments of a bullet and lost two students during the February 14 mass shooting that took 17 lives. From the MSD poets’ first meeting after the shooting through their performance in the festival this past April, the documentary chronicles their journey as they openly discuss their struggles, how their lives have changed, what they hope to see change in the future and how performing the poem has helped them heal.
Over the past three years, the locally produced half-hour special has received three Regional Emmy® nominations and one Emmy® Award win.
