Recently, LGBTQ Victory Fund endorsed candidate Zooey Zephyr won the Democratic primary for Montana’s 100th state House District. With this victory in a heavily Democratic district, she is now on track to become the first out trans person ever elected to the Montana state legislature.
According to LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Out for America Map which tracks out LGBTQ elected officials nationally, there are currently only six out LGBTQ elected officials in Montana and just eight out trans state legislators in the entire country.
Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund, issued the following statement about her win:
“Montanans’ voices rang loud and clear tonight: they are ready for a leader ready to disrupt the status quo and fight for real change. From tackling the housing crisis to securing affordable health care to fighting back against attacks on human rights, Zooey has a persuasive vision for the future that voters are clearly enthusiastic about. Her win tonight is a deafening rebuke to the anti-trans bigotry plaguing the Montana state legislature and our country. We are confident she will be a skilled, powerful legislator and an inspiration for trans people across the country.”
Victory Fund named Zephyr a Spotlight candidate, a designation given to state or local candidates in history-making races, that comes with additional support and services from LGBTQ Victory Fund to ensure they win on Election Day.
