Wendy Stuart Kaplan and Steven Bloomer-Teague will be hosting TriVersity Talk this Thursday at 7 pm ET with featured guest Mariah Lopez.
TriVersity Talk is a weekly web series with featured guests discussing their lives, activism and pressing issues in the LGBTQ Community. With TriVersity Talk!, the goal is to laugh and learn.
TriVersity Talk! Is part of TriVersity’s ICARE Initiative. ICARE stands for Increasing Community Awareness through Relevant Education. ICARE Programs are generously funded by The Greater Pike Community Foundation.
Wendy and Steven are happy to welcome the Executive Director of the Strategic Transgender Alliance for Radical Reform (STARR), Mariah Lopez! Join us to learn more regarding the history of Pride, of STARR, and of the fight to reform the Heritage of Pride March in NYC.
Mariah Lopez is considered one of the nation’s leading voices for Trans civil rights.
Born in NYC, Mariah first made history through a series of transformative legal cases challenging lack of legal protections and healthcare for Queer kids in foster care. During this time she met and was adopted by Sylvia Rivera. Her cases have led to radical reform within New York’s healthcare system where it relates to gender affirming care. Another case, still pending in NY’s Southern District (Lopez v DHS et al), is on course to bring about radical reform within NYC’s adult shelter system. Namely for individuals with disabilities and who identify as TGNC.
Shortly after Sylvia’s death on February 19th, 2002, Mariah, with decades of legal knowledge behind her, and huge shoes to fill, reformed STARR, the nation’s first Trans rights organization founded by Sylvia and Marsha P Johnson. She turned its focus towards fighting for high impact policy and legal reform for TGNC individuals, across all areas of life.
